Kitchens can basically be designed in 5 shapes: Straight, L-Shaped, U shaped Island or Gallery Kitchen. The kitchens are designed to ensure maximum storage area and easy free movement and also to ensure space optimization.
The most common kitchen is Straight Kitchen. Here the kitchen is fixed on a single wall and all the appliances are fixed on one wall only, this provides with the least amount of storage and is used when the kitchen is of small size.
The U shape kitchen in fixed on 2 walls, in this type of kitchen usually the sink and hob are placed on separate walls. A similar look is the U shape kitchen where the kitchen is fixed on 3 walls as against the L shape kitchen.
In case of open kitchen or where the size of kitchen area is large, both the island kitchen and the gallery kitchens are a good option. The Island kitchen involves having a separate free standing counter in the center of the kitchen or adjoining to the fixed against wall counter. This counter can be used as a serving counter or fixing of appliances, breakfast counter or generally as an extra area for keeping utensils and other crockery. While in the gallery kitchen, the counters are fixed on opposite walls. In this kind of kitchen shape, generally one wall incorporates the cooking area and the other wall includes the wet area and the storage area made with tall units etc.
